Liberal Arts, Secondary Teacher Education Specialization in English, AA

PURPOSE: This program is specifically designed for students who plan to transfer into an English major at most four-year universities and plan to teach English at the secondary level. Following the prescribed coursework in this program will result in graduation with the Associate in Arts Degree (A.A.) in Liberal Arts with a Specialization in Secondary Teacher Education in English. Students who complete this program will be required to pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills exams for acceptance into teacher education programs at four-year universities. Students should consult with their faculty advisors to ensure that they select courses that best prepare them for the specific requirements of their intended transfer college or university for a major in English. Specific secondary teacher education requirements vary at universities; however, and students should consult with four-year universities for additional guidance regarding electives for pre-teacher preparation.

By the completion of this program, students will be expected to demonstrate an intermediate level of competency in the following skills:

  1. Convey an understanding of the history of education in the United States.
  2. Articulate the attainment of an introductory level of proficiency in speaking and listening in a foreign language.
  3. Demonstrate the attainment of an introductory level of proficiency in reading and writing a foreign language.
  4. Create a lesson plan based on an analysis of a sample related to the program of study.
  5. Integrate and display communication, instruction, and assessment strategies in a 40-hour field internship setting.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Students must meet JTCC admission requirements. Students may need to complete placement tests in English and mathematics. If students have deficiencies in English and/or mathematics, JTCC offers developmental and prerequisite courses to prepare students for the curriculum. New students should visit the Advising Center and returning students their faculty advisor for more information.

NOTES:

1Students are strongly encouraged to complete their SDV, ENG, and MTH requirements first.

2Students should consult with their academic advisor and check with prospective four-year institutions to determine best options for transfer.

3Students should enroll in the highest-level foreign language course for which they are prepared. Heritage or conversationally fluent speakers may enroll directly into 102. Most four-year English and history degrees require completion of a foreign language at the 202-level; 101, 102, and 201 should be taken only as needed in preparation for 202. Students who are not required to complete lower-level foreign language must select from the Approved Electives listed below. Please check with your advisor to determine the best option(s) for course substitution or if you wish to take a foreign language other than Spanish or French.

4Students should regularly meet with their faculty advisor, confirm requirements at their intended four-year transfer institution, and check their advisement report in MyTyler – SIS.
