Museum Studies, CSC

PURPOSE: Introduces students to the museum field. Also offers professional development for students already employed by museums and other cultural organizations engaged in the display and maintenance of collections. Program may be completed online.

By the completion of this program, students will be expected to demonstrate an introductory level of competency in the following skills:

  1. Describe the importance of a museum’s mission to its core activities.
  2. Summarize the policies and procedures that should be followed when working with museum collections, including those related to: acquisitions, dispersals, risk management, and care and handling.
  3. Successfully complete an internship at an approved museum, gallery, or cultural institution.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Students must meet JTCC admission requirements. New students should visit the Advising Center and returning students their faculty advisor for more information.

2ART 185 - Introduction to Museum Education  is cross-listed with HIS 185 - Introduction to Museum Education . Credit will not be awarded for both. Contact your advisor or the division office for more information.

3One-credit ART 195  and/or HIST 195  Topics in Museum Studies courses will be regularly offered online and will cover a range of subjects relevant to current issues in the museum field.

4ART 186 - Collections Management  is cross-listed with HIS 186 - Collections Management . Credit will not be awarded for both. Contact your advisor or the division office for more information.

5Students should regularly meet with their faculty advisor and check their advisement report in MyTyler – SIS.
