Early Childhood, CSC

PURPOSE: This program provides students with the knowledge and skills required to work with young children birth to age eight and is at Level 4 of the Virginia Career Pathways for Early Childhood and Out-of-School Time Practitioners, where Level 3 is a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential. The curriculum is designed to benefit persons currently employed or seeking employment working with young children in settings such as preschools, child care centers and homes, Head Start and Early Head Start programs, and before-and-after school programs. Students completing this program will have earned 16 of the 31 credits needed for the Early Childhood Certificate (Pathways Level 5).

By the completion of this program, students will be expected to demonstrate an introductory level of competency in the following skills:

  1. Identify the environmental supports that promote a young child’s physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development.
  2. Use anecdotal records and checklists to assess the development of young children.
  3. Construct instructional tools appropriate for teaching social and emotional skills to young children to prevent challenging behavior.

NOTES:

1CHD 165  is a practicum class that requires students to observe young children and participate in an approved early childhood setting for 40 hrs throughout the semester.

2To enroll in CHD 165  students must have a declared early childhood major and complete a TB screening, a criminal background check and a sex offender registry check, as a condition of placement in a practicum site. Students are expected to cover all costs for these procedures.

3Students should regularly meet with their faculty advisor and check their advisement report in MyTyler – SIS.
