PURPOSE: This one-year program prepares students for jobs as administrators in an adult home setting such as a residential assisted living facility. It also provides training for students already working in the field. All career-technical degrees are guided by advisory committees comprised of local business leaders.

CREDENTIALS: A Career Studies Certificate (CSC) is a program of study typically less than one year in length with a major in a career-technical area. Students receiving a CSC intend to pursue immediate employment. The CSC in Adult Home Administration is in compliance with State of Virginia requirements for Adult Home Administration. Graduates may be eligible for licensure by the Virginia Board of Nursing Home Administrators. Students planning to pursue State Certification following graduation are required to complete 100 hours in an adult administration practicum.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Students must meet JTCC admission requirements. Persons entering the public or private sectors of human services will be subjected to criminal background and sex offender registry checks, as well as a TB screening as a condition of their placement in a training/practicum site. Students will be expected to cover any costs incurred for these procedures. These tests will be required as a condition of employment. PROGRAM OUTCOMES: By the completion of this program, students will be expected to demonstrate an introductory level of competency in the following skills:

Demonstrate knowledge of the aging process and the impact of disabilities across the life span.
Identify public policy and laws pertaining to the elderly and persons with disabilities.
Describe human services theory, vocabulary, and skills needed in the field.

Students should regularly meet with their faculty advisor and check their advisement report by accessing the Student Information System (SIS) through the myTyler portal.

Students must complete a placement test in English and complete all remedial English courses prior to enrolling in any of the Human Services/Mental Health Certificates or degrees.

Students must obtain a grade of “C” or better in the human services sequence courses (HMS 100 , MEN 101 and MEN 102) in order to remain in the program.

This program is in compliance with State of Virginia requirements for Adult Home Administration. Students planning to pursue State Certification following their graduation are required to complete 100 hours in an adult administration practicum.

Students must complete HMS 100 and MEN 101 before enrolling in MEN 102.

Students must complete HMS 100, MEN 101 and HMS 106 or HMS 236 prior to enrolling in MEN 190 and MEN 196.

MEN 190 and MEN 196 are co-requisites and must be taken in the same semester. All students who plan to pursue a degree or certification in Human Services are required to complete a 100 hour internship in an Adult home facility. Students will secure their own internship sites prior to the start of their MEN 190 and MEN 196 classes. All internships must be approved by the Human Services and Mental Health Program chair.

Students who are convicted felons or are on the sex offender registry in any state will not be able to secure internship sites. Students who are 18 years of age or younger may not be able to secure an internship. Should students be unable to secure an internship because of the above reasons, they will be unable to complete the requirements of this certificate and therefore be unable to graduate.
