Course Descriptions

Course Numbers

Course numbers appear before the course titles. Courses numbered 1 – 99 are developmental courses. The credits earned in these courses cannot be applied toward a degree, certificate or diploma. Courses numbered 100 – 299 can be applied to an appropriate associate degree program, and they may also be used in certificate programs.

Course Credits

Course credits are provided after the course titles. One credit is equivalent to a total of 750 minutes of instruction.

The number of lecture and laboratory hours is shown at the end of each course description. The total number of lecture and laboratory hours is referred to as “contact” hours since it reflects the time spent each week under the supervision of a faculty member.

Prerequisites and Corequisites

Prerequisites are identified in the course description and must normally be met prior to enrollment. If a corequisite is identified, it means the two courses should be taken at the same time.

Photography
	PHT 296 - Filmmaking Internship 3 credits Specializes in career orientation and training program (without pay) supervised and coordinated by the College in selected local businesses and industries. Credit/work ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours.
	PHT 299 - Supervised Study 3 credits Assigns problems for independent study incorporating previous instruction and supervised by the instructor. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours.
Physical Education and Recreation
	PED 109 - Yoga 1 credit Focuses on the forms of yoga training emphasizing flexibility. Laboratory: 2 hours. Total: 2 hours per week.
	PED 111 - Weight Training I 1 credit Focuses on muscular strength and endurance training through individualized workout programs. Teaches appropriate use of weight equipment. Laboratory: 2 hours. Total: 2 hours per week.
	PED 116 - Lifetime Fitness and Wellness 2 credits Provides a study of fitness and wellness and their relationship to a healthy lifestyle. Defines fitness and wellness, evaluates the student’s level of fitness and wellness, and motivates the student to incorporate physical fitness and wellness into daily living. A personal fitness/wellness plan is required for the 2–credit course. Lecture: 1 hour. Laboratory: 2 hours. Total: 3 hours per week.
Physical Therapy Assistant
	PTH 151 - Musculoskeletal Structure and Function 5 credits Studies the human musculoskeletal system. Covers terms of position and movement, location and identification of specific bony landmarks, joint structure and design, ligaments, muscle origin, action and innervation, and emphasizes types of contraction. Lecture: 3 hours per week Laboratory: 5 hours per week Total: 8 hours per week
Physics
	PHY 100 - Elements of Physics 4 credits Covers basic concepts of physics, including Newtonian mechanics, properties of matter, heat transfer, waves, fundamental behavior of gases, optics, ionizing radiation, and fundamentals of electricity and magnetism. The assignments in the course require college-level reading fluency, coherent written communication, application of arithmetic, exponents, and algebraic skills such as solving for an unknown variable in an equation, and finding the slope and intercept from the equation of a line. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Laboratory: 3 hours per week. Total 6 hours per week.
	PHY 101 - Introduction to Physics I 4 credits Surveys general principles of physics. Includes topics such as force and motion, energy, heat, sound, light, electricity and magnetism, and modern physics. Lecture: 3 hours. Laboratory: 3 hours. Total: 6 hours per week.
	PHY 201 - General College Physics I 4 credits Covers classical mechanics and thermodynamics. Includes kinematics, Newton’s laws of motion, work, energy, momentum, rotational kinematics, dynamic and static equilibrium, elasticity, gravitation, fluids, simple harmonic motion, calorimetry, ideal gas law, and the laws of thermodynamics. Part I of II. This is a UCGS transfer course. Lecture: 3 hours. Laboratory: 3 hours. Total: 6 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): MTH 161 or MTH 167 with a grade of C or better, or other placement methods.
	PHY 202 - General College Physics II 4 credits Covers waves, electromagnetism, optics, and modern physics. Includes mechanical waves, sound, electrostatics, Ohm’s law and DC circuits, magnetic forces and magnetic fields, electromagnetic induction, ray optics, wave optics, and selected topics of modern physics. Political Science
	PLS 135 - U.S. Government and Politics 3 credits Teaches the political structure, processes, institutions, and policymaking of the US national government. Focuses on the three branches of government, their interrelationships, and how they shape policy. Addresses federalism; civil liberties and civil rights; political socialization and participation; public opinion, the media; interest groups; political parties; elections; and policymaking. The assignments in the course require college-level reading fluency and coherent communication through written reports. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course. Lecture: 3 hours per week.
	PLS 241 - Introduction to International Relations 3 credits Provides an introduction to the causes of international conflict and cooperation. Focuses on the modern state, diplomacy, war initiation, crisis bargaining, international terrorism, nuclear strategy, interstate economic relations, economic growth, international law, human rights, and environmental politics. This is a UCGS transfer course. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): ENG 111 or departmental consent.
Practical Nursing
	PNE 145 - Trends in Practical Nursing 1 credit Studies the role of the Licensed Practical Nurse. Covers legal aspects, organizations, and opportunities in practical nursing. Assists students in preparation for employment. Lecture: 1 hour. Total: 1 hour per week.
	PNE 158 - Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing 1 credit Recognizes emotional needs of patients. Provides knowledge of the role that emotions play. Enables students to understand their own behavior as well as patient behavior. Lecture: 1 hours. Total:1 hour per week.
	PNE 162 - Nursing in Health Changes II 11 credits Continues the focus on nursing situations and procedures necessary to assist individuals in meeting special needs related to human functions. Lecture: 6 hours. Laboratory: 15 hours. Total: 21 hours per week.
	PNE 164 - Nursing in Health Changes IV 11 credits Continues the focus on nursing situations and procedures necessary to assist individuals in meeting special needs related to human functions. Lecture: 5 hours. Laboratory: 18 hours. Total: 23 hours per week.

	PSY 116 - Psychology of Death and Dying 3 credits Focuses on psychological aspects of death and dying. Teaches the meaning of death and ways of handling its personal and social implications. Includes psychological, sociological, cultural, and religious views of death. Lecture: 3 hours per week.
	PSY 200 - Principles of Psychology 3 credits Surveys the basic concepts of psychology. Covers the scientific study of behavior and mental processes, research methods, biological bases of behavior, sensation and perception, developmental psychology, learning, memory, thinking, intelligence, personality, social psychology, and psychological disorders and treatment. The assignments in the course require college-level reading fluency and coherent communication through written reports. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): Eligible for ENG 111 .
	PSY 210 - Statistics for Behavioral Sciences 4 credits Introduces the principles and processes of statistics within behavioral research. Emphasizes understanding and applying statistical tests to behavioral data. Stresses recognition and use of process, based upon knowledge and understanding, over mathematical derivation. Focuses on selection of appropriate statistics, their application, and correct decisions of interpretation within a behavioral research experience. Lecture: 4 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): Completion of PSY 200 with a grade of C or better AND completion of MTH 245 with a grade of C or better.
	PSY 225 - Theories of Personality 3 credits Studies the major personality theories and their applications. Includes psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive and humanistic perspectives. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): Completion of PSY 200 with a grade C or better, PSY 201 or PSY 202.
	PSY 230 - Developmental Psychology 3 credits Studies the development of the individual from conception to death. Follows a life-span perspective on the developmental tasks of the person’s physical, cognitive and psychosocial growth. Lecture: 3 hours per week.
Religion
	REL 100 - Introduction to the Study of Religion 3 credits Explores various religious perspectives and ways of thinking about religious themes and religious experience. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course. Lecture: 3 hours per week.
	REL 230 - Religions of the World 3 credits Introduces religions of the world with attention to origin, history and doctrine. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course. Lecture: 3 hours per week.
Russian
	RUS 101 - Beginning Russian I 5 credits Develops the understanding, speaking, reading, and writing of Russian, and emphasizes the structure of the language. May include oral drill and practice. Lecture: 5 hours per week. May include one additional hour of oral practice per week.
	RUS 102 - Beginning Russian II 5 credits Develops the understanding, speaking, reading, and writing of Russian, and emphasizes the structure of the language. May include oral drill and practice. 	RUS 201 - Intermediate Russian I 3 credits Continues the development of the skills of understanding, speaking, reading, and writing of Russian. Class conducted in Russian. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): RUS 102 or equivalent. May include oral drill and practice.

	SAF 126 - Principles of Industrial Safety 3 credits Teaches principles and practices of accident prevention, analysis of accident causes, mechanical safeguards, fire prevention, housekeeping, occupational diseases, first aid, safety organization, protection equipment and general safety principles and promotion Lecture: 3 hours per week
	SAF 130 - Industrial Safety – OSHA 10 1 credit Presents an introduction to occupational health and safety and its application in the workplace. Emphasizes safety standards and the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), its rules and regulations (OSHA 10). Lecture: 1 hour per week.
Sociology
	SOC 200 - Introduction to Sociology 3 credits Introduces the fundamental concepts and principles of sociology with attention to sociological theory, research methods, and the impact of social inequality. Examines a variety of topics such as culture, race, social class, gender, major social institutions and their role in contemporary society, and the processes of social change. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course. Lecture: 3 hours per week.
	SOC 211 - Cultural Anthropology 3 credits Examines the origins, development, research, diversification and evolution of human cultures. Includes exposure to the variability of both Western and Non-Western aspects of culture. Provides an introduction to the nature of culture and its relationship to various social institutions and societies. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course. Lecture: 3 hours per week.
	SOC 268 - Social Problems 3 credits Introduces the fundamental concepts underlying social problems construction with attention to how these problems are defined, understood and arbitrated. Examines a variety of topics such as researching social problems and policymaking. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course. Lecture: 3 hours per week.

Student Development
	SDV 100 - College Success Skills 1 credit Assists students in transition to colleges. Provides overviews of college policies, procedures, curricular offerings. Encourages contact with other students and staff. Assists students toward college success through information regarding effective study habits, career and academic planning, and other college resources available to students. May include English and math placement testing. Strongly recommended for beginning students. Required for graduation. Lecture: 1 hour per week.
	SDV 101 - Orientation to Discipline 1 credit Introduces students to the skills which are necessary to achieve their academic goals, to services offered at the college and to the discipline in which they are enrolled. Covers topics such as services at the college including the learning resources center; counseling and advising; listening, test taking, and study skills; and topical areas which are applicable to their particular discipline. Lecture: 1 hour per week.
	SDV 108 - College Survival Skills 2 credits Provides an orientation to the college. Introduces study skills, career and life planning. Offers an opportunity to engage in activities aimed at self-discovery. Emphasizes development of “coping skills” such as listening, interpersonal relations, competence, and improved self-concept. Recommended for students enrolled in developmental courses. Lecture: 2 hours per week.
Unmanned Systems
	UMS 107 - Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Remote Pilot Ground School 2 credits Presents the aeronautical knowledge required for FAA approved commercial operations as a Remote Pilot with small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) rating. Covers the regulations applicable to small UAS operations, loading and performance, emergency procedures, crew resource management, determining the performance of the small unmanned aircraft, and maintenance/inspection procedures. Prepares students for the FAA written examination required to obtain the Remote Pilot certificate. Lecture: 2 hours per week
Welding
	WEL 116 - Welding I (Oxyacetylene) 2 credits Teaches oxygen/acetylene welding and cutting including safety of equipment, welding, brazing and soldering procedures and cutting procedures Lecture: 1 hour. Laboratory: 3 hours. Total: 4 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): Pre- or Co-requisites: SAF 130 andWEL 150 .
	WEL 120 - Introduction to Welding 2 credits Introduces history of welding processes. Covers types of equipment, and assembly of units. Stresses welding procedures such as fusion, non-fusion, and cutting oxyacetylene. Introduces arc welding and plasma arc cutting. Emphasizes procedures in the use of tools and equipment. Lecture: 1 hour. Laboratory: 3 hours. Total: 4 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): Pre- or Co-requisites: SAF 130 , WEL 150 or MAC 181 .
	WEL 123 - Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Basic) 3 credits Teaches operation of AC and DC power sources, welding polarities, heats and electrodes for use in joining various metal alloys by the arc welding process. Deals with running beads, butt and fillet welds in all positions. Emphasizes safety procedures Lecture: 2 hours. Laboratory: 3 hours. Total: 5 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): Pre- or Co-requisites: SAF 130 and WEL 150 .
	WEL 130 - Inert Gas Welding 3 credits Introduces practical operations in the uses of inert-gas-shield arc welding. Discusses equipment, safety operations, welding practice in the various positions, process applications and manual and semi-automatic welding Lecture: 2 hours. Laboratory: 4 hours. Total: 6 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): Pre- or Co-requisites: SAF 130 , WEL 150 , WEL 248 .
	WEL 141 - Welder Qualification Tests I 3 credits Studies techniques and practices of testing welded joints through destructive and non-destructive testing. Part I of II Lecture: 2 hours per week. Laboratory: 3 hours per week. Total: 5 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): Pre- or Co-requisites: SAF 130 , WEL 150 , WEL 247 .
	WEL 150 - Welding Drawing and Interpretation 2 credits Teaches fundamentals required for successful drafting as applied to the welding industry. Includes blueprint reading, geometric principles of drafting and freehand sketching, basic principles of orthographic projection, preparation of drawings and interpretation of symbols. Lecture: 2 hours per week.
	WEL 160 - Gas Metal Arc Welding 3 credits Introduces semi-automatic welding processes with emphasis on practical application. Includes the study of filler wires, fluxes and gases Lecture: 2 hours. Laboratory: 3 hours. Total: 5 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): Pre- or Co-requisites: SAF 130 and WEL 150 .
	WEL 161 - Flux Cored Are Welding (FCAW) 3 credits Introduces flux cored semi-automatic welding processes with emphasis on practical application. Includes the study of filler wires, fluxes, and gases. Lecture: 2 hours. Laboratory: 3 hours. Total: 5 credits per week. Prerequisite(s): SAF 130 , WEL 150 are prerequisites or corequisites.
	WEL 164 - Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) 3 credits Introduces practical operations in the use of tungsten arc welding and equipment. Studies equipment operation setup, safety, and practice of Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG). Lecture: 2 hours. Laboratory: 3 hours. Total: 5 credits per week. Prerequisite(s): SAF 130 , WEL 150 are prequisites or corequisites.
	WEL 244 - Weld Testing and Codes 2 credits Covers non-destructive (NDT) weld testing and how it plays a critical role in assuring that structural components and materials meet specified requirements. Examines how and why these NDT processes are used and will use them to test welds and weldments. Lecture: 1 hour. Laboratory: 3 hours. Total: 4 hours per week.
	WEL 247 - Welding Layout and Fabrication I 2 credits Introduces student to project layout from shop sketches/ blueprints, developing templates/patterns and the use of fabrication tools. Covers the safe operation of different types of manual metal fabrication equipment used in the industry. Examines safe and efficient use of the manual metal shear, metal roller, metal break and other fabrication. (Part I of II) Lecture: 1 hour. Laboratory: 3 hours. Total: 4 hours per week. Prerequisite(s): Pre- or Co-requisites: SAF 130 and WEL 150 .
	WEL 248 - Welding Layout and Fabrication II 2 credits Applies previously learned skills from Welding and Fabrication I in a job-simulated situation. Focuses on pipe, structural steel and other weldments that will be fabricated using all available equipment and welding processes. Covers job site type blueprints and drawings used in fabrication. Incorporates American Welding Society (AWS) visual inspection, weld measurements and codes. (Part II of II) Lecture: 1 hour. Laboratory: 3 hours. Total: 4 hours per week.
